Welcome to the Exhibition:As the culmination of Kohei Okamoto’s half-century study of Kukai since his 20s, we are pleased to present his works at the Takamatsu Mitsukoshi Art Gallery.

In his youth, Kukai spent his days practicing mountain asceticism, and during his diplomatic mission to Tang China, he achieved remarkable success. He brought back Esoteric Buddhism from China, which sparked a new style of Buddhism that differed significantly from the conventional teachings. The Buddhist art that Kukai created and introduced to Japan was like contemporary art, such as the three-dimensional mandala, and his performances transcended time and space, leaving everyone amazed.

In this exhibition, we invite you to take a time-traveling journey through Kukai’s turbulent life and experience the sensation of that era. Kohei Okamoto’s artworks, ranging from classical calligraphy to landscape paintings and contemporary art that explore the possibilities and potential of calligraphy, leading us into the world of Kukai 1,250years ago.
